2008 Acura MDX Review Summary The 2008 Acura MDX is a luxurious and performance-minded crossover with a balanced combination of good handling and utility that is fun to drive. It was re-launched in 2007 with improvements in a number of areas including engine, safety and size. One of the few complaints from just about every review is was the exterior style in particular the grille. As with most of the crossovers in its class, there is a third row seat but it is only suitable for kids. Rated LEV-2 by CARB and ULEV by the EPA. The Acura MDX has one engine style, a 3.7-liter V6 with 300 horsepower, 275 torque and comes with a five-speed automatic transmission with manual shift control. The Acura MDX accelerates from 0 to 60 mph in 8.1 seconds and fuel economy is 15 mpg city/20 mpg highway – Average for its class. Positioned against the luxury midsize crossover SUVs such as the BMW X5, Porsche Cayenne, Infinity FX and Lexus RX350, the Acura MDX holds its own given its few flaws and overall competitiveness in many features and cost of the base model at only $40,500.
2008 Acura MDX Review Handling Corners very tight thanks to the torque being shifted from wheel to wheel, when appropriate, by the all wheel drive system. The Sport package dampers do well in sponging up the bumpers at slow speeds and firm up at faster speeds. A number of reviews note the smooth and smart transmission that always seemed to be in the sweet spot in terms of providing power and not straining. As noted by Caranddriver, the “ delivers a high fun to drive quotient.” Washington Post liked the Acura MDX’s handling and said it is “a beautiful machine” but the Washington Post preferred to call it a station wagon given its very limited off road abilities.
2008 Acura MDX Review Safety The Acura MDX comes standard with safety equipment such as antilock disc brakes with brake assist, front seat side airbags, full-length side curtain airbags, active front head restraints and stability control with a stabilizing feature. Government crash tests scored the 2008 Acura MDX with a five out of five star rating in both frontal and side-impact tests. The Washington Post noted that the “Acura MDX's rear seats are able to withstand a crash of 50 mph, thus meeting the federal government's new, tougher standard for rear-end crash protection” and noted that consumers should check rival’s ratings
2008 Acura MDX Noteworthy The 2008 Acura MDX has arguably the most powerful 6 cylinder in its class. The Acura MDX car-based design, stiff chassis and an electromechanical all-wheel-drive system all contribute to well balanced handling and luxury sports sedan feel as noted by Forbes, Businessweek. Cars.com and Edmunds. In fact, Cars.com called it “truly outstanding, able to handle sharp cornering effortless.” The electromechanical all-wheel-drive system can direct power from side to side and front to rear thus offering torque where it can be used the most. Business Week among others thought that the Acura MDX handles even better than the BMW X5. The interior materials are rated as high quality and well put together by most reviewers. Though the center console area was noted as confusing to some reviewers. Cars.com noted that the Acura’s navigation system took a step backward in the 2007 redesign by adding a knob and losing the touch screen.
