The BMW X5 comes in two variations, distinguished primarily by engine type, both with all-wheel drive. For 2008, both models get an upgrade in standard equipment, new engines and a six-speed automatic transmission. The BMW X5 3.0si ($46,200) is powered by a 3.0-liter inline six-cylinder engine delivering 260 horsepower. It comes well equipped, with a 12-speaker, single-CD stereo, niceties such as a choice of wood trim, rain-sensing wipers, power tilt/telescoping steering wheel, driver's seat memory and, for 2008, a power sunroof.

As noted by Forbes, CNET Caranddriver, the BMW X5 is tuned for its sportyness and as an SUV for the high-performance in mind. But that other SUVs in its class offer better value and utility. In 2007 BMW added cargo space and a rather small third row folding seat. They also improved front suspension. The BMW X5 is offered in 2 trims, the 3.0si and 4.8i. The former comes with a 3 literV6 producing 260 horsepower and 225 pound-feet of torque and gets 15 city and 21 highway mpg. The latter comes with 4.8 liter V8 producing 350 hp and 350 lb-ft of torque and gets 14 city and 19 mpg highway. Both engines come with a six-speed automatic transmission and full-time all-wheel drive. As you may expect, caranddriver, CNET among other commented that the 4.8i is more fun, fast acceleration from a stand to drive but also noticeably more expensive. It comes with 18 inch wheels as standard. Some of the improvements in the 2007 BMW X5 included longer length by 7.4 inches, larger interior, standard six-speed automatic transmission, upgraded suspension and all-wheel-drive system, and the body has been optimized to be both lightweight yet stiff.

As one might expect, it offers very limited off road capabilities though BMW did increase ground clearance in 2007.
