2008 MINI Cooper Hardtop Overview The 2008 Mini Cooper is available as a two-door hatchback called the hardtop, a four-seat convertible, and the convertible, and a longer-wheelbase wagon called the Clubman.  Two trim levels are available, the standard Cooper and the higher-performing Cooper S.   Yet while the hardtop is a second-generation car, the convertible is still carried over from the previous generation.  So they really are more different than they might at first appear.

2008 MINI Cooper Hardtop Review Summary
The 2009 Mini Cooper, ranked 7.8 by ACG, doesn’t provide the same practicality as some of its competition in the affordable small cars class, but it compensates with its style and superb overall performance and handling. For 2009, the Cooper convertible has been redesigned, the latest version of the John Cooper Works is unveiled, and stability control now comes standard on all trims. The Cooper comes in three trim levels: the Cooper, Cooper S and John Cooper Works. The standard engine is a 1.6-liter in-line 4-cylinder that produces 118 horsepower and 113 pound-feet of torque, but buyers can opt for a 1.6-liter in-line 4-cylinder turbocharged which creates 172 horsepower and 177 pound-feet of torque. The Cooper comes standard with a six-speed manual transmission, but an automatic is available. Nearly every reviewer raved about the Mini Cooper’s sporty performance and handling during road tests, specifically mentioning the fact that there was little roll and almost no bouncing over bumps. The Mini is a fun ride that, according to reviewers, handles like a kart and shifts like a BMW, especially with the turbocharged engine that has negligible lag and seems to be available at any time. The Cooper’s slick retro lines, wisely left unchanged by BMW, are also aesthetically pleasing. The interior of the Mini has many pros and cons. On the bright side, the small cabin makes the most a limited amount of space and the materials are of excellent quality. Reviewers were impressed with the quality of the standard six-speaker stereo and even more so by the optional 10 speaker package that includes HD radio and a lifetime subscription to SIRIUS satellite radio. However, some reviewers complained that the gauges were not all that practical and the interior a little too cute overall. Somewhat surprisingly, the Mini offers a good amount of head and legroom for the front row seating, but the back seats are extremely uncomfortable for anyone. The Mini’s cargo space is not anywhere near as generous as some of the competitors in its class, but it allows for 5.7 cubic feet with the rear seats up and 24 cubic feet once the 50/50 split rear seats are folded down.

2008 MINI Cooper Hardtop Review Handling
The responsive electric power steering, which has been upgraded from the earlier hydraulic system, helps to make driving the 2009 Mini Cooper a pleasure. The strong brakes and excellent maneuverability also help to make the Cooper a sporty and fun drive.

2008 MINI Cooper Hardtop Review Safety
All 2009 trim levels come standard with antilock disc brakes, stability control and front-seat side airbags. In federal crash testing, the Cooper hatchback received four out of five stars for frontal crash protection and side-impact tests yielded a perfect five stars for front side protection and four stars for rear occupants. The hatchback received a “Good” rating for frontal-offset crash protection and the second best rating of “Acceptable” for side impact protection from the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety.

2008 MINI Cooper Hardtop Noteworthy
The 2009 Cooper and Cooper S offer the option of Dynamic Traction Control (DTC), which is a slightly better version of Mini’s stability control program. Also, a 160mph speedometer and an available Smartphone prêt package are new for 2009.
