2008 MINI Cooper Convertible Overview
The 2008 Mini Cooper is available as a two-door hatchback called the hardtop, a four-seat convertible, and the convertible, and a longer-wheelbase wagon called the Clubman. Two trim levels are available, the standard Cooper and the higher-performing Cooper S. Yet while the hardtop is a second-generation car, the convertible is still carried over from the previous generation. So they really are more different than they might at first appear.
2008 MINI Cooper Convertible Review Summary The 2008 MINI Cooper Convertible, ranked 8 by ACG in the Affordable Small Cars class, is a consumer’s slam dunk choice for a sporty and fun to drive vehicle that still maintains functionality and comfort, even if it isn’t the most stylish convertible on the road. The Cooper can be had as a two-door hatchback, known as the hardtop, a four and two-seat convertible, and as a wagon called the Clubman. Two trim levels are available: the standard Cooper and a turbo charged Cooper S. In 2007, BMW completely redesigned all aspects of the Cooper, including a brand new engine in conjunction with Peugeot. Although the new engine produces the same horsepower as the old (118 in the MINI Cooper and 172 in the MINI Cooper S), the new turbocharger in the Cooper S delivers 177 pound-feet of torque from 1600 to 5000 RPM. Additionally, suspension alterations and a new electromechanically assisted steering, which uses an electric motor instead of hydraulics, make the Cooper easier, safer and better performing at high speeds. Naturally, the new Cooper S provides an exhilarating ride for all, and maintains decent gas mileage while doing so. While the Cooper’s superb performance and handling comes as little surprise, most reviewers were quite taken back by the shockingly comfortable, functional, and feature laden interior. Despite the Cooper’s tiny size, it is still spacious inside. Reviewers say that even a six-foot, five-inch driver will be comfortable in the plush front seat, and the manual levers, controlling height, rake, and front-rear position, provide comfortable positions for both driver and passenger. External music systems, a specific adapter for an IPod, and a Sirius satellite radio receiver with a lifetime subscription are all generous interior features offered by the Cooper. That said, the audio and HVAC controls are one feature that almost all reviewers criticized since they are made of cheap plastic and obviously take away from the otherwise upscale interior materials. The Cooper’s rear hatch, and folding rear seatbacks, allows for a generous 24 cubic feet of cargo to be loaded. This is more than adequate two passengers taking a trip of lengthy distance. Overall, the 2008 MINI Cooper is a cute, affordable, functional and fun handling car to drive
2008 MINI Cooper Convertible Review Handling While the Cooper S comes standard with a sport-tuned suspension, its behavior is far superior to other vehicles who can reach similar track speeds. The MacPherson Strut front suspension and multi-link rear suspension, borrowed from the BMW Z44, keeps the Cooper flat and balanced in corners, while simultaneously keeping passengers unaffected by large bumps. Nearly all reviewers gave the Cooper full marks for tight and responsive steering that adds to an already otherwise sporty performance.
2008 MINI Cooper Convertible Review Safety The Cooper comes standard with several safety features, including: 4-wheel anti-lock brake system (ABS), corner brake control (CBC), driver/front passenger airbags, ISOFIX child seat attachments, roll-over protection system, and twin horns.
2008 MINI Cooper Convertible Noteworthy In 2007, the MINI Cooper was totally redesigned and to satisfy European environmental and fuel-economy regulations, BMW teamed up with Peugeot to design an efficient and powerful new engine and turbocharger that is the shining star of the Cooper S.
