2008 Mazda RX-8 Review Summary
The 2008 Mazda RX-8, ranked 7.5 by ACG, is a member of the affordable sports car class of vehicles and distinguishes itself from the competition with seating for four, reverse-opening rear doors and a rotary engine yielding 232 horsepower at just 1.3 liters. Reviewers offer differing opinions with respect to the unique exterior styling of the Mazda RX-8. Some applaud it for successfully meeting the needs of those looking for a practical sports car while others feel that the RX-8’s raised fenders, low, open grille and reverse-opening rear doors with glass windows creates a design “mishmash” that makes the vehicle look odd. All agree that the 2008 Mazda RX-8 has a variety of assets including a powerful and lightweight rotary engine, smooth handling, stylish cabin and comfortable (for it’s size) rear seat. Experts were disappointed with the RX-8’s poor fuel economy relative to competitors like Mazda’s MX-5 Miata, it’s maintenance-heavy rotary engine and it’s aging design. The Mazda RX-8 comes in three trim levels: Sport, Touring and Grand Touring. Each level features a number of pre-bundled options that can include heated leather seats, eight-way power driver’s seat, power moonroof, Bose audio, MP3 player, in-dash six-disc CD changer, xenon headlamps, sport suspension, DVD navigation, spare tire kit, torque-sensing limited-slip rear axle, traction control and stability control. All Mazda RX-8s are outfitted with a choice of a six-speed automatic transmission (with paddle shifters) or a six-speed manual transmission. Additional RX-8 standard equipment includes a 232-horsepower rotary engine (212 horsepower with the automatic), six-speed manual transmission, four-wheel anti-lock disc brakes (ABS), rear defroster, four cup holders, rear console, keyless entry, dual power mirrors, AM/FM stereo with CD, side-impact and side-curtain airbags, rear-seat pass-through, cruise control, sport suspension, tire pressure monitor, power windows, power locks and a tilt-wheel with touch controls.

2008 Mazda RX-8 Noteworthy
The 2008 Mazda RX-8 is the only car on the planet currently in production with a rotary engine that offers many advantages including an impressive power-to-size ratio, much lighter weight and fewer moving parts than a traditional engine. Its disadvantages include poor fuel economy, disappointing acceleration (7 second 0-60 mph time) and a high level of maintenance.
