2008 Pontiac Solstice Review Summary The 2008 Pontiac Solstice, ranked 8.2 by ACG, is an extremely affordable sports car that has better looks and more power than the Mazda MX-5 Miata (Its chief competitor), but lacks the overall refinement, athleticism and practicality of some of MX-5’s features like its retractable top and rear cargo space available even with the top down. Reviewers unanimously praise the Solstice for its stunning exterior design and cock-pit style interior layout that angles the controls toward the driver and features motorcycle-inspired gauges. Good looks aside, the Solstice also delivers in the performance department with its standard 2.4-liter 177-horsepower inline-4 that delivers excellent low-end torque for strong launch and passing performance, yet still happily revs to its 6,600-rpm redline when initiated by the driver. This is especially impressive considering it’s extremely affordable price tag which is among the most competitive in its class. While reviewers were smitten with the 2008 Pontiac Solstice’s exterior styling most complained that its interior fit and finish left a little to be desired. Several reviewers also were disappointed with the Pontiac Solstice’s tricky to raise and retract manual convertible top which must be raised and lowered from outside of the vehicle. Additionally, critics pointed out that the Solstice lacks ample cargo space (even for a sports car) and its wide gear-spacing can make its manual transmission sluggish and difficult to operate. The 2008 Pontiac Solstice comes in base and high-performance GXP trims. Standard on both are 18-inch wheels with 245/45 performance tires, a manual soft top (with an acoustic headliner and a glass rear window with defogger), a tilt steering wheel, OnStar telematics, a trip computer and an audio system with satellite radio, a CD/MP3 player and an auxiliary input jack. The GXP trim adds a turbocharged engine (2.0-liter 260 hp four), a limited-slip differential, dual exhaust outlets, fog lamps, cruise control, full power accessories, keyless entry and a leather-wrapped steering wheel. While many of the GXP’s features are available on the base Solstice, air-conditioning, leather seating, upgraded audio with a six-disc CD changer, sport pedals and the Club Sport Package are optional on both trims.
The 2008 Toyota Camry is a four-door, five-passenger sedan offered in five trim levels, including the gas-electric Camry Hybrid. Camry CE ($18,570) features a 158-hp four-cylinder engine. It's equipped with cloth upholstery, air conditioning and pollen filter, cruise control,...
