2008 Toyota Matrix Review Summary
The 2009 Toyota Matrix handles well, is comfortable, stylish and efficient thus making the Toyota Matrix a practical entrant in the Affordable Compact Wagons and ranks #9 by Allcarguides.com. The second generation Matrix combines assets from multiple vehicle types including a compacts efficiency and performance, SUVs utility and minivans comfort. The Matrix was not changed in 2008 and only minor changes in 2007 and even the 2009 changes are modest but include 3 inches more in height, a 2.4 liter engine in the mid range S and higher-end XSR models. The XSR has sport tuned suspension and steering as well as 18 inch wheels. The front-wheel-drive Matrix is closely related to the Corolla so, as one might expect, it is described by many reviewers as practical, efficient and reliable. Though the interior and exterior design as well as handling are described as sportier than the Corolla but few consider it sporty. The base model Toyota Matrix has an efficient 1.8-liter four-cylinder engine that delivers 132 horsepower and 128 torque and comes with standard five-speed manual transmission with an optional four-speed automatic. The S and XRS models come with a sportier 2.4-liter engine that produces158 horsepower and 162 torque. Fuel economy in the1.8 liter base model is 26 city and 32 highway while the 2.4 liter engine delivers 21 city and 28 highway.

2008 Toyota Matrix Review Handling
The 1.8 is slightly pokey when starting from zero or when merging into highway traffic. The Matrix corners nicely and has a smooth ride. Described as practical but not exciting to drive. The majority of reviewers were unenthused by its driving but most seem to call it sensible.

2008 Toyota Matrix Review Safety
The 2009 Matrix comes with standard antilock disc brakes – the S and XRS have larger discs – and standard front-seat side airbags and full-length side curtain airbags. Stability control is included on the XRS and optional on other models. In government tests the 2009 Matrix scored well receiving 5 starts for drivers and passenger frontal and 5 and 4 for side impact front and rear, respectively.

2008 Toyota Matrix Noteworthy
The 2009 Matrix improvements from the prior model are described for the driver as exceptional ergonomics for the control panel and improved driving position.
