2008 Toyota Yaris Review Summary
Introduced in 2007, the Toyota Yaris has remained mostly the same – A bare bones compact car with great mileage, good interior space but relatively poor handling and safety feature – and is ranked number 4 Allcarguides.com. It is available as a three door hatchback and a sedan. Both offer a standard and S trim that is sportier. The S trim is new in the hatchback body style in 2008. Very few of its competitors are available as a three door hatchback and offer 4 door hatcback or sedan thus distinguishing the Yaris. The Sedan is considerably larger than the hatcback with 3 more inches of wheelbase and nearly 20 additional inches in length making the Yaris sedan a roomy choice among subcompacts. The Yaris a front wheel drive subcompact with a 1.5-liter four-cylinder engine that produces 106 horsepower and 103 torque and comes with a standard five-speed manual or an optional four-speed automatic transmission. As noted by a few reviewers, the Yaris acceleration is not the best in class, especially from a stand-still, with only adequate acceleration from the manual transmission and feels sluggish in the automatic. Also it’s cornering, feel for the road and steering leave much to be desired. Though it is very cheap CNET among others noted that this comes with cost and much is sacrificed a lot to achieve its rock-bottom price. EPA-estimated fuel economy with the manual transmission checks in at 29 mpg city and 36 mpg highway make it a very economical choice for a non-hybrid.

2008 Toyota Yaris Review Handling
The 2008 Toyota Yaris, despite it’s diminutive size, has a reasonably solid feel. A number of reviewers noted that the electric power steering makes maneuvering at slow speeds easy but also lacks any sense of feel for the road as noted by Caranddriver which described it as “joyless steering.” Acceleration from zero is adequate and merging and passing at higher speeds is acceptable for its class. The Yaris' small four-cylinder engine is surprisingly peppy with the manual transmission, and reasonably smooth even when operating at higher speeds. But as noted by a few reviewers including caranddriver and CNETthe Yaris’s low weight does not result in tight cornering or handling and suffers from more body roll than one expects from such a light car. This is probably due to no traction control or other road holding electronics or antilock brakes being available as standard or options.

2008 Toyota Yaris Review Safety
CNET noted that the Yairs “Short on safety-tech standards such as antilock brakes, traction control, and side air bag” and there was no other safety data available when this summary review was written.

2008 Toyota Yaris Noteworthy
Described as a very good urban car for its small size and maneuverability which makes sense since it was first introduced and hugely popular in Europe and Asia. Though caranddriver called it cartoonish based on exterior lines and LA Times also commented pporly on its exterior design. At less than $12,000 the Yaris is a very cheap way to get into a Toyota and less expensive and less fun than most of its competitors. Despite its low price, as noted by CNET “Toyota has managed to keep the interior from looking cheap. The manually adjustable front seats are comfortable, and the cloth feels soft but tough. Fit and finish on the dashboard seem solid, and the materials have a nice texture” but high tech features such as Bluetooth and voice command are not offered so the Yaris may disappoint gadget fans. Low emissions give the Yaris a ULEV-2/Bin 5 rating. The Yairs gets 34 city and 40 highway which is about the same as a Toyota Corolla and Honda Civic which are larger and more fun to drive. The exterior design is noted as odd by a few reviewers such as business wee, La times and others.
