2008 Volvo V50 Overview
The 2008 Volvo S40 sedan and V50 wagon are essentially the same car, save the obvious sedan/wagon distinctions. Both seat five passengers. Front-wheel drive is standard, but all-wheel drive is available. The S40 2.4i ($24,365) and V50 2.4i ($26,815) are powered by a 2.4-liter five-cylinder engine generating 168 horsepower and 170 pound-feet of torque.
2008 Volvo V50 Review Summary The 2008 Volvo V50 has significant improvements from the 2007 model. The exterior has a more sleek and modern look while interior changes include improved storage space on the dashboard. The front wheel drive Volvo V50 wagon comes in three trims: 2.4i, T5 and T4 All wheel drive. The Turbocharged T5 model has 9 more horsepower than the 2007 model bringing it to 227 horsepower and 236 torque. While the 2.4i has 168 hp and 170 torque. Mileage is pretty good with the 2.4i at estimated 22 mpg city/31 mpg highway, and the more powerful T5 is nearly the same. Adding the All Wheel Drive to the T5 gets 20 mpg city/28 mpg highway. It has tough competition from the Audi A4 which has more power and better handling.
2008 Volvo V50 Review Handling The 2.4i has modest acceleration but the T5 gets nearly same mileage but with more power. The Volvo V50 handles nicely but can be a bit rough on rough surfaces.
2008 Volvo V50 Review Safety : As one might expect from a Volvo, it offers many features as standard: Antilock disc brakes, traction control and stability control are standard on all 2008 Volvo V50s. All models offer front-seat side airbags and full-length head curtain airbags along with whiplash-reducing head restraints in all outboard positions. Though not yet crash tested by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration one reasonably expect it to perform similarly to the S40 sedan which earned a perfect five-star rating in side-impact tests, four stars for driver protection and five stars for the front passenger in frontal-impact tests.
2008 Volvo V50 Noteworthy Interior is very elegant and the center dashboard area is simple and easy to use. Cargo cappacity is good for a small wagon measuring 27.4 cubic feet, and with the 60/40 rear seat folded down, it is an impressive 62.9 cubic feet. It shares a number of parts with Mazda 3 and Eurpean version of the Ford Focus. AS noted by Forbes, the 5 cylinder engine should provide better gas mileage than typical 6 cylinder cars with similar power but fails on both counts.
