2009 Saab 9-3 Review Summary
For those who are unwilling to sacrifice solid performance for wagon functionality, the only slightly changed 2009 Saab 9-3, ranked 8.2 by ACG, might be a decent choice in the affordable wagon class. The 9-3 is a little too pricey, especially considering the fact that the company’s future is uncertain, (Saab declared bankruptcy in Sweden) but most reviewers like what they see. The wagon is available in two trim levels: the 2.0T base trim and the Aero. The 2.0T comes standard with a turbocharged four-cylinder that generates 210 horsepower and 221 pound-feet of torque, and the Aero is equipped with a 2.8-liter six-cylinder engine that creates 280 horsepower. Both trim levels come standard with a six speed manual transmission that many reviewers consider imprecise. The 9-3s combination of a strong power train and all-wheel drive system make it a favorite among reviewers when it comes to performance and handling. The wagon is generally regarded as a smooth handler with the sportiness that is typical of Saab. Reviewers gave praise to the 9-3s ride and suspension even though many feel that the steering is a little too light and that Saab has a long way to go before it matches the performance of cars and wagons produced by German and Japanese rivals. The 9-3s exterior style received total praise for going against the typical box look of most wagons, but it’s interior reviews were much more mixed. While the wagon’s seating is comfortable and there is enough room for passengers and cargo, (though not as much as others in the affordable wagon’s class) the poor quality plastics and inconsistent fit and finish of the interior leaves a bad taste in reviewer’s mouths. Even still, the easy to find and use controls and unique features impressed reviewers. In particular, the “night panel,” which allows the driver to shut down much of the lights on the dash in an effort to reduce the glare at night.

2009 Saab 9-3 Review Handling
According to most reviewers, the 2009 Saab 9-3 offers a smooth ride and excellent suspension. The handling is firm and the ABS breaks don’t give off any vibration or break fade over several hard stops.

2009 Saab 9-3 Review Safety
The 2009 Saab 9-3 is an Insurance Institute for Highway Safety “Top Safety Pick” and received four out of five stars for driver and passenger protection in frontal crash tests, four out of five for rear seat passenger protection in side impact tests and five out of five for the front seat passenger protection in side impact crashes.

2009 Saab 9-3 Noteworthy
A new Cross-Wheel Drive (XWD) option is available on the 2009 9-3 wagon base 2.0T model for the first time. Also, the V6 Aero receives a significant bump in horsepower, while a limited slip rear differential that is electronically controlled is added to the Aero models with XWD.
