2009 Subaru Outback Review Summary
For consumers looking for more of an SUV and less of a wagon than some of the competition in the affordable wagons class, the 2009 Subaru Outback, ranked 8.7 by allcaguides.com, fits the bill. But while the Outback resembles an SUV in terms of style and feel of the ride, buyers should beware that it does come with some of the drawbacks of an SUV—most notably in terms of fuel economy. The 2009 edition of the Outback is no longer available in L.L. Bean trim, but stability control is now standard regardless of trim. Also, the 2.5i Special Edition makes its debut in 2009, and all models except for the base 2.5i receive an upgraded nine speaker sound system. The Outback is available in five trim levels: base 2.5i, 2.5i Special Edition, 2.5i Limited, 2.5 XT Limited and 3.0R Limited. It comes standard with a 2.5 liter four cylinder engine that creates 170 horsepower and 170 pounds of torque, but a turbo charged four cylinder or 3.0-liter V6 is available. According to most reviewers, the Outback is reasonably powerful, especially with the turbocharged 4-cylinder engine or the V6. As far as mechanics is concerned, the Outback’s transmission could use considerable improvement, as reviewers believe it saps power by upshifting too early. Overall, though, the Outback offers a moderately firm ride and very good cornering ability, but it is the Outback’s utility that makes it most impressive to reviewers. The standard all-wheel drive allows it to go off road and handle foul weather conditions with ease in a way that other all-wheel drive systems do not. The Outback’s exterior has the rugged look of an SUV, but isn’t as nice as other wagons such as the Volvo V50. Reviewers noted that the Outback’s interior features are top-notch—even base models come equipped with power windows and door locks, cruise control, remote keyless entry, an MP3 compatible stereo with a CD player and air conditioning. Interior materials quality is also high as the dash and door tops have an upscale grain and feel soft to the touch. As far as seating is concerned, the Outback seats two in the front and three in the rear. Also, the Outback lacks the third row seat of a crossover SUV that it attempts to compete with, and cargo space is limited when compared to other wagons.

2009 Subaru Outback Review Handling
For the most part, reviewers have praised the Outback’s handling abilities. The ride is smooth and firm, and while the Outback requires more brake pedal pressure during a panic stop, the breaking performance is fine overall. The excellent all-wheel drive system enables the Outback to drive in just about any condition and on just about any surface.

2009 Subaru Outback Review Safety
The Outback received five out of five stars in frontal and side crash tests conducted by the National Highway Transportation and Safety Administration. Antilock breaks with electronic break-force distribution, front and front side airbags and side curtain airbags are standard on the Outback.

2009 Subaru Outback Noteworthy
: The all-wheel drive system in the 2009 Outback is superior to the competition. The Outback drops the L.L Bean trim, a new Special edition package offers heated front seats, a power driver’s seat, windshield wiper de-icer, heated side mirrors, fog lights, a limited slip rear differential and 17-inch alloy wheels. Also, a 440-watt, harman/kardon stereo is standard on all models except the base 2.5i.
