2009 Volvo V50 Review Summary
The more costly 2009 Volvo V50, ranked 8.5 by ACG, isn’t capable of carrying as many passengers and cargo as most of its competitors in the affordable wagon class, but it compensates for that by offering consumers a more stylish and modern look than is typical among wagons. A few modifications have been made to the 2009 edition of the V50, including the addition of standard Bluetooth capability and a six CD changer and sunroof. Also, a manual transmission is no longer available in the V50 and the front wheel drive T5 model ceases to exist. The V50 comes in two different trim levels: the 2.4i, which uses a 2.4-liter inline five cylinder engine that produces 168 horsepower and 170 pound-feet of torque, and T5, which uses a turbocharged inline five cylinder engine that creates 227 horsepower and 236 pound-feet of torque. Most reviewers praised the performance of the V50, but some believe that the available sport suspension creates an uncomfortable ride. Also, reviewers complained about the base engine’s lagging acceleration. With the T5 now available in All-Wheel Drive, the V50’s handling is vastly improved, even though reviewers feel that the handling still falls short of true sport wagons. Perhaps one of the V50s best attributes is its slick exterior, which reviewers feel breaks away from Volvo’s reputation for producing ugly looking vehicles. As for the V50s interior, the seating is relatively comfortable considering the wagons small size, and reviewers are impressed with the standard T-Tec upholstery that Volvo claims is stain and wear resistant. The interior features are user friendly, with large and well-identified buttons, and of fairly good quality. The V50 offers more hauling capacity than a sedan and some other smaller wagons, but it certainly won’t satisfy the consumer who needs a true people mover. With the rear seat up, the V50 allows 37.4 feet of cargo space and 62.6 cubic feet with the rear seat down. While the 2009 V50 isn’t terribly thirsty, its fuel economy disappointed some reviewers because its numbers are equal to that of some compact SUVs.

2009 Volvo V50 Review Handling
Despite feeling that the sport suspension (standard on theT5 and optional on the 2.4i) compromised the comfort of the ride, most reviewers feel that it greatly improves the V50s handling. The V50 has responsive steering and solid break performance, though some reviewers noted that the brake pedal was a little soft for their liking.

2009 Volvo V50 Review Safety
Most reviewers praised the many top-notch safety features that come standard on the V50, despite the fact that the wagon has not been crash tested by the federal government or the insurance industry. The V50 is, however, nearly identical to the Volvo S40, which earned four out of five stars for driver protection in front crashes and five stars for front passenger protection in side impact crashes. The S40 earned perfect scores for both front and rear seat passenger protection in side impact crash tests.

2009 Volvo V50 Noteworthy
The All-Wheel Drive T5 version of the 2009 V50 receives R-Design styling enhancements including: a unique grille, body cladding and leather interior, as well as additional standard equipment.
