2010 Kia Soul Overview
There are four Kia Souls: the base, the +, the !, and the sport. No, those aren't typos. The Soul ($13,300) uses a 1.6-liter engine making 122 horsepower, five-speed manual transmission, and comes with rugged cloth seats, power windows and door locks, 60/40 rear seat, solar glass, rear wiper/washer, and an AM/FM/CD/MP3/SAT sound system with USB port and auxiliary input jack. It has steel 15-inch wheels with wheel covers, front disc brakes, rear drum brakes.
2010 Kia Soul Review Summary The 2010 Kia Soul, ranked 7th by ACG in the Affordable Small Cars class, looks much like an SUV that is classified as a hatchback. In this case, it's alright to judge a book by its cover since the Soul’s sporty look comes with sporty performance and a nice price tag. The base trim, although only powered by a 1.6-liter I4 engine that generates a mere 122 horsepower, is a stepping stone to the more powerful well-equipped trims – the Soul Plus, Soul Exclaim, and the Soul Sport, which hold a 142 horsepower 2.0 liter I4 engine. The base trim comes with only a five-speed manual transmission, and the other three trims come with either a standard five-speed manual or an option for a four-speed automatic. Although tall, the Kia Soul manages to stay intact and provides more than enough resistance to body roll with its 18-inch tires. The Soul Sport, with a 142 bhp engine, manages to go from 0-60 mph within 8.8 seconds and a braking force that brings it to a dead stop from 60 mph at a distance of 128 feet, making it one of the more competitive vehicles within its class. Although it provides little thrill for the highway, it brings a sudden feel of acceleration when those street lights turn green as the acceleration at lower speeds is phenomenal for an engine of this power. As for the pump, the Kia Soul manages to squeeze in as a good fuel economy car with an overall EPA rating of 28 mpg. The exterior design is similar to the Scion xB with a boxy look. That look is toned down, however, with curves, giving it a rather sharp design that hides the car’s height. Although the interior is made from rather cheap materials – mainly hard plastics – is manages to win over most reviewers since they say they love the style. The dashboard comes in a two-tone color, creating a soft look, and in what would otherwise have been a monotonous black dash is now a crisp, clean, tightly fitted look. As for the seats, reviewers state that they are too soft and couldn't possibly give the driver and passengers enough support for a long drive. On the plus side, though, there is a lot of leg room and head space for the rear seats. With such tall doors, getting in and out is easy. The cabin manages to get pretty noisy even for a car in its class, but consumers can always drown that out with a little music, which is supported by the stereo system that is AM/FM/CD/MP3 capable, satellite-radio ready, and can integrate Blue-tooth phone controls. Overall the car is comfortable and offers style perfect for any driver of any age.
2010 Kia Soul Review Handling The Soul's handling receives mixed results from reviewers. For some it had a sporty feel and drove very well, cornering not being a problem at the appropriate speeds, but for others the Soul failed to provide the right feel that a hatchback should provide.
2010 Kia Soul Review Safety Overall the Kia Soul did well in government crash tests, earning a five out of five stars for frontal crashes and five out of five in driver's protection from side crashes, as well as a four out of five stars for passenger protection in side collisions. Of course for such a tall vehicle how could a consumer not be concerned about rollovers potential. Consumers will be happy to note that the Kia Soul received a four out of five stars in rollover testing. The Insurance Institute for Highway Safety gave the Soul a rating of ''Good'' for all tests and named it a Top Safety Pick for 2010. Safety features that come standard with the Kia Soul are ABS, Brake Assist, Electronic Brake Force Distribution, Electronic Stability Control, Traction Control, and a Tire Pressure Monitoring System.
