2010 Volvo C70 Overview The 2010 Volvo C70 T5 ($40,000) comes standard with the retractable hardtop.  A six-speed manual transmission comes standard; a five-speed automatic is optional ($1,250).   Standard features include fabric upholstery, dual-zone electronic climate control, power front seats with memory, tilt/telescope leather steering wheel with audio controls, power heated outside mirrors with memory, and 160-watt in-dash CD/MP3 player, eight speakers and auxiliary and USB inputs.  Bluetooth telephone interface is standard.

For consumers who value a competitively priced quality car with a comfortable riding experience, classic interior and exterior style, decent fuel economy, and a magnificent safety record, the 2010 Volvo C70 convertible, ranked 8.1 by ACG in the Upscale Midsize Cars class, is worthy of strong consideration. That said, interested parties should be aware that the C70 can in no way compete with the best in this class when it comes to power and performance. For 2010, the C70 is available in only one trim level and is powered by a turbocharged five cylinder engine that produces 227 horsepower. While the C70’s engine power is sufficient for most casual drivers because it provides decent acceleration and highway-passing power, it’s certainly underpowered and far less exciting to drive than rivals such as the Infiniti G37 and BMW 3-Series. As they have for years now, reviewers like the exterior body style of the C70, especially it’s sculpted lines and classic grille. But because the C70 hasn’t been given a design overhaul in so long, the look is no longer unique and several automakers have emulated the C70’s design. It is for this reason that Volvo has decided to completely re-design the C70 for 2011, and consumers that aren’t totally set on the current design might want to hold out for the next model year. The interior of the 2010 Volvo C70 remains one of the highlights of this car. The passenger cabin is styled elegantly and offers high-quality materials, competitive electronics, soft-touch surfaces, and perhaps the best front seats available in any car. Indeed, speaking of the C70’s front seats, Cars.com writes, “Seats an orthopedist can love, simple functionality and lushness somewhere between premium and luxury.” While the C70’s front seats receive raving reviews, the rear seats don’t receive feedback that is quite as positive. Even though the rear seats are spacious when compared to other two door convertibles, they’re really only useful for children or small adults. The interior technology of the 2010 C70 is best described as intuitive. There’s little of the wow factor that one might get from the interior technology of the Acura TL, but most everything, with perhaps the exception of the standard stereo system, is well made and user-friendly. Lastly, when it comes to cargo space, the 2010 Volvo C70 is often proclaimed the class leader in trunk space. This, however, needs to be taken with a grain of salt considering that the C70 offers only a tiny bit more trunk space than competitors. That said, since almost no convertible offers adequate storage space, consumers might find even a little more room to be meaningful.

There’s no way to sugar coat the fact that the 2010 Volvo C70 is not even close to as good a handler as the upper echelon cars in this category. Even though it is the only front-wheel-drive car, it offers a dull riding experience that isn’t the least bit sporty. Additionally, reviewers complain of numb steering feel and lousy cornering. On the bright side, however, the C70 does offer very strong brakes.

As it has for years, Volvo continues to extremely impress and outclass competitors when it comes to safety. Although the federal government has not performed crash tests on the 2010 C70, the car does come with a laundry list of standard safety equipment, much of which cannot be matched by competitors. Front and front-side airbags are standard, as is a Roll-Over Protection System and Volvo’s Whiplash Protection System (WHIPS), which places active head restraints at all seating positions.

The C70 received a Predicted Reliability score 7.0 (Good) from J.D. Power and Associates. It carries Volvo’s four-year/50,000 mile warranty, and also offers fully covered scheduled maintenance for the first three years or 36,000 miles of ownership. Additionally, it’s worth making note of the fact that the C70 was the first convertible in the world to offer full-length side curtain airbags, which inflate upward from the doors in order to protect the heads of all passengers even when the top is down.
